I Admit, I’m Worried

Trekkies Bash New Star Trek Film As ‘Fun, Watchable’
As I’ve pointed out before, The Onion is ultimately always right, so I am scared about how to think about the new Star Trek movie. I want it to be good …. but not good in a commercial, soda-poppy, generic-action-flick sort of way. I want it to be great, intellectual and slightly … just SLIGHTLY innaccessible to the majoriy. If that makes me a bad person, I hope it’s in a Harcourt Fenton Mudd sort of way.
Yah, sadly, while there were some sort of in-jokes, mostly, it’s a fairly generic space action flick. And I felt that a lot of the plot point jumps were a little tenuous (though the basic storyline was okay).
There’s an old National Lampoon Radio Hour spoof of the classic Star Trek where the Kirk character just basically keeps saying, “Shucks - ain’t I somethin’?!” I felt like he was saying that all through the film. (I also kept waiting for Spock to cut the top of someone’s head off.) Scotty’s lots of fun.
Really, it may not be the movie you’re looking for, but it’s still that fun space action flick. Besides, Spock is Sylar, Kirk is one of the Tremor Bros., Sulu is a fan of White Castle, Scotty killed zombies with a cricket bat, and Uhura’s sailed with Jack Sparrow.
