Why I hate my shoes

March 23rd, 2006

I think I’ve had it with these shoes.

They’re nice enough looking, and pretty comfortable, but the shoelaces have finally driven me around the bend.

I’m a grown man. I’ve tied my shoes about 20,000 times in my life, conservatively speaking, (that was a fun little calculation). It’s not like it’s new to me. I know how to do it. Yet these shoes that I’m wearing today just won’t stay tied up!

I’m not a “double tie” man. I prefer to be able to take my shoes off in a hurry, in case I need to, you know, dive into a lake and save someone who is drowning. It’s a safety issue really.

Yet because of these shoes, I’m forced to either double tie, or tie my shoes every 100 feet that I walk. Coming back from lunch with Matej today I had to tie the same shoe 4 times. This has to stop, or someone is gonna die.

Okay, now I feel better. A little.

On the flip side, I’ve been recently going on and on about how I love my shoes (just ask Janet!). I’ve had my trusty Bostonian shoes (bought in Boston no less) for 4 years. And they’ve essentially been my sole (ahem) set of black shoes for 4 years. They’ve gone hundreds and hundres of miles, survived at least two new sets of laces, and been to Hong Kong and back twice! I’ve been trying to replace them for the last two years but alas I just cannot find an appropriate replacement pair…

the problem is that you’re laces are round. try getting flat laces; that should do the trick.

That’s what a bunch of people have told me. I guess I should give it a try. I’m not sure if they’ll go with the shoes, but the last time I checked the price of shoelaces it didn’t strike me as being too expensive. Worth giving it a try. :)

My daughters were taught this hack from the Git-go and they love it…instead of double knotting, go “around the tree TWICE and then pull loop through. It still unties easily, but won’t come undone unintentionally.

Hmm. Go around the tree twice eh?

It’s hurting my brain trying to figure that out, and I’m currently wearing slip on style, so I can’t test it. I’ll have to get back to you. :)
